What began last year as an offbeat idea over dinner turned into reality this week when the Hispanicize team and a small contingent of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises executives met at the Vatican to personally give Pope Francis a special Telemundo/Hispanicize award for his innovative use of social media.
The award was first announced and given to Pope Francis during the 2nd Annual Tecla Awards ceremony that took place during Hispanicize Event in Miami on April 7th, where it was announced Hispanicize and Telemundo would be traveling to Rome to personally hand the award to Pope Francis.
The Pope’s work with the Scholas Ocurrentes Foundation, a program that connects technology with arts and sports programs in order to promote social integration (especially in poorer communities) was a major reason why Hispanicize and Telemundo gave Pope Francis the Innovation Award. Pope Francis is a man of substance who is universally admired for positively disrupting the papacy with a visionary approach that is refreshing, humble and cool. While in Rome – and Italy in general – the Hispanicize team was generously hosted and accommodated by their official hotel partner Best Western. Over the course of their stay the team documented this historic journey and all of their adventures, history and travel insights through social media using the hashtags #HispzInRome and #ViajaConBW.
